Balanced Literacy Program

Students are immersed in a literature rich classroom environment, reading books together as a class, in small groups or individually.  Center activities develop skills needed to grow to become fluent readers and writers—that is, great communicators.

Literacy Centers

SFDRCISD

 

Students explore a variety of books from the classroom as well as the library.

 

Alphabet Arc

Students put the letters in alphabetical order on the arc. Progressively more difficult arcs are used, including those which only have a,m,n and z listed.

Alphabet Order

Students place letter blocks in alphabetic order. There is one set of lower case and one set of capital letters.

Computer Center

Students work alone or in pairs on computers using a variety of software. Students learn to type word wall words in MS Word and progress to sentences and stories.

Foam Letters

Students use foam letters to spell out their names, familiar words such as high-frequency words and vocabulary words. Students progress to writing sentences.

Name Center

Students match photos of students with written names.
     

Puppets

Students act out stories they have written using puppets. Or, they make up stories as they go along!

Writing Center (Stamps)

Students use letter stamps to form words & sentences.

Flash Writing

Students write the letter(s) that the teacher dictates.  Later in the year, students write dictated words and sentences.
